Στο πλαίσιο της Ελληνικής Προεδρίας, το Υπουργείο Αγροτικής Ανάπτυξης και Τροφίμων και το Κοινό Κέντρο Ερευνών (ΚΚΕρ - JRC) της Ευρωπαϊκής Επιτροπής συνδιοργανώνουν στις 9 το πρωί της Τετάρτης 23 Απριλίου 2014, υψηλού επιπέδου Συνέδριο με θέμα «Συνέδριο για την Επιστημονική Υποστήριξη της Γεωργίας: Ανταγωνιστικότητα, Ποιότητα & Βιωσιμότητα», στην Αθήνα, στο Ζάππειο Μέγαρο.

Την έναρξη των εργασιών του Συνεδρίου θα κηρύξουν ο Υπουργός Αγροτικής Ανάπτυξης και Τροφίμων κ.Αθανάσιος Τσαυτάρης και η Διευθύντρια του Ινστιτούτου Περιβάλλοντος και Αειφορίας του ΚΚΕρ κα Maria Betti.

Ο στόχος του συνεδρίου είναι να συμβάλλει στη διαμόρφωση προτάσεων πολιτικής για την Ευρωπαϊκή Ένωση, προκειμένου να αναπτυχθεί μία ανταγωνιστική και βιώσιμη γεωργία, υπό το πρίσμα της Ελληνικής Προεδρίας του Συμβουλίου της Ε.Ε. και της σημασίας της γεωργίας για την ελληνική οικονομία.

Η ευρωπαϊκή και η παγκόσμια γεωργία αντιμετωπίζουν νέες, πρωτόγνωρες προκλήσεις και η αντιμετώπισή τους θεωρείται υψηλή πολιτική προτεραιότητα. Η παραγωγικότητα της γεωργίας πρέπει να αυξηθεί, προκειμένου να διασφαλιστεί η επισιτιστική επάρκεια για έναν πληθυσμό που αυξάνεται διαρκώς. Ταυτόχρονα, απαιτείται αύξηση της παραγόμενης βιομάζας για την παραγωγή όχι μόνο τροφίμων και ζωοτροφών αλλά και ενέργειας και βιομηχανικών προϊόντων. Οι προκλήσεις αυτές πρέπει να αντιμετωπιστούν στο πλαίσιο της αυξανόμενης αβεβαιότητας λόγω των επιπτώσεων της κλιματικής αλλαγής και με τη γενική παραδοχή ότι η αύξηση της παραγωγής τροφίμων πρέπει να επιτευχθεί βάσει προσέγγισης που να συνάδει με την αειφορία του περιβάλλοντος και των φυσικών μας πόρων.

Προσκεκλημένοι ομιλητές από την Ελλάδα και την Ε.Ε θα εξετάσουν το μέλλον των ευρωπαϊκών γεωργικών συστημάτων, την κλιματική αλλαγή και την αποδοτικότητα των πόρων. Επίσης, θα συζητηθούν τρόποι βελτίωσης των γενετικών πόρων καλλιεργούμενων φυτών για υψηλότερες αποδόσεις και αειφορία. Η συζήτηση στρογγυλής τραπέζης που θα ακολουθήσει θα εστιαστεί στην επανάσταση στα νεοεμφανιζόμενα πεδία των βιοεπιστημών (γονιδιωματική, επιγονιδιωματική, μεταγονιδιωματική) και στις επιπτώσεις τους στη βελτίωση και την καλλιέργεια των φυτών.

Το συνέδριο θα διεξαχθεί στην αγγλική γλώσσα.
